Professionally accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science, the BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science programme is designed to enable you to develop, integrate and apply scientific knowledge, understanding and skills in the multi-disciplinary investigation of human disease and disorder. The course will prepare you for further training, research or emplyment in various scentific disciplines.
You will cover human physiology, biochemistry, cell biology, genetics, microbiology and immunology. Laboratory and teaching sessions will provide you with the scientific knowledge and technical skills that will underpin your studies in Year 2 and 3. In addition, you will be able to develop relevant analytical, communication and transferable skills.
You will gain more understanding of molecular biology and acquire expertise in a range of specialist investigative techniques; epidemiology & data analysis; and research methods. Coverage of subjects such as medical biochemistry, cellular pathology, haematology, transfusion science, medical microbiology, immunology, pharmacology and toxicology will explore the nature and importance of disease processes.
The final year focuses on integrating your learning to provide you with an appreciation of the multidisciplinary approach to research, diagnosis and management of disorder and disease. Subjects covered will include the laboratory investigation of disease, bioinformatic analysis and a selection of topics of current relevance to this field. The final year research project will further encourage independent enquiry, the development of technical skills and critical analysis.
