Dental nurses are dental care professionals who work as part of the dental team. The dental nurse’s role is to provide chair-side support to clinical team members during treatment sessions in a dental surgery. This includes preparation of the appropriate instruments, mixing of dental materials and ensuring patient comfort. His or her duties will also include the preparation and maintenance of the clinical environment while complying with infection control guidelines, recording of clinical charting, maintaining patient’s records and the processing of dental radiographs. Dental nurses may be called upon to give advice to patients, monitor and reassure patients and assist in dealing with complaints procedures.
All Dental nurses in the UK must be registered with the General Dental Council. Dental nurses can seek employment in general practice, hospitals or the community dental services.
