Who we’re looking for

This is an ideal role for school leavers, people coming back to work after a career break or those looking for a change of career. You will have strong organisational and communication skills and an eye for detail, be able to work independently and within a busy team, and demonstrate flexibility and a commitment to the role. You’ll also need to have IT skills, including the ability to use email, the Internet, MS Word and Excel.

You will need five GCSEs (or equivalent) at grade C or above or relevant office-based experience. Whilst we accept applications from graduates for this role, you should note that it is not a graduate level position. Our Intelligence Officer Development Programme (IODP) and Technology Graduate Development Programme (TDGP) are more suited to those looking for a graduate job. We recruit for the IODP and TGDP several times a year.

Due to the sensitive nature of our work, you will need to be very discreet. Our staff cannot discuss their work or tell anyone that they work for MI5, except their partner or a close family member, providing they are British.

Before you apply

The role is based at our London headquarters, Thames House. You will need to live within a commutable distance and you should consider the financial implications and practicalities of working in central London prior to submitting an application. Please note: we do not cover relocation costs.

Recruitment process

The recruitment process for this role is outlined below (in order):

Eligibility Questions – you will answer a number of questions based on the requirements for the role.

Initial Application Form – you will create a personal account, where you will complete our initial application form.

Online Assessment – consisting of 2 online tests;

i)    A filing test designed to assess your ability to organise alphabetical and numerical information into a meaningful order and to label items using predefined criteria. It draws upon some of the skills needed for filing within our organisation. You will be given 15 minutes to complete the test and you will need to do this in one sitting.

ii)    A text checking test designed to assess your ability to check the accuracy of written information. You will be asked to check two sets of text (an original and a copy), spotting and categorising any errors made in the copy. You will be given 10 minutes to complete the test and you will need to do this in one sitting.

Practise Questions:
Application Form – you will be asked to complete the full application form.

Telephone Interview – this interview should last approximately 45 minutes and will check that you have the potential skills and motivation to work for MI5.

Face to Face Interview – this interview will take place at Thames House, our headquarters in central London. This interview will further explore that you have the potential skills and motivation to join MI5.

Security Interview – this interview will take place at Thames House. This is an important part of the selection process. It is an interview to explore your life and experiences and is not a competency or capability-based interview.

Please note, you must successfully pass each stage of the process in order to progress to the next.

Guaranteed Interview Scheme

As part of our commitment to the “Disability Confident” scheme we offer an interview to all candidates with a disability who meet our minimum criteria for the job vacancy that they are applying for. This is known as the Guaranteed Interview Scheme (GIS).

To secure an interview for this vacancy, the minimum criteria (refer to the recruitment process, as above) are:

Eligibility Questions – we must be satisfied that you meet all of our eligibility criteria.

You will be required to reach the pass mark set for both tests.

Application form – along with the standard eligibility requirements for this post, your application will be assessed on how far you meet the job specification and competency questions you answer. Your application must score the minimum amount of points set.

On successful completion of these stages, you will be invited to interview. This will normally be a telephone interview and is our guaranteed interview.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible to apply, you must meet our residency criteria. You must be a born or naturalised British citizen and one of your parents must be a British citizen or have substantial ties to the UK.

Candidates must normally have been resident in the UK for nine out of the last ten years prior to application. This is particularly important if you were born outside of the UK. You will nonetheless be considered if you have for example, served overseas with HM Forces or in some other official capacity as a representative of Her Majesty’s Government, studied abroad, or lived with your parents.

Due to vetting requirements you will need to be 18 years old or above, to apply. Your application may take around six to eight months to process.

Discretion is vital. You should not discuss your application, other than with your partner or a close family member, providing that they are British. You should also make them aware of the importance of discretion. You should not post on social media sites about your application or discuss it with anyone else at this stage. You will receive further guidance during the recruitment process.

Please note you should only launch your application from within the UK. If you are based overseas, you should wait until you visit the UK to launch an application. Applying from outside the UK will impact on our ability to progress your application.
