The Role:

Our Building Operations Managers are responsible for ensuring that MI5’s buildings remain operational and that all work is carried out safely and efficiently. You will be part of a team working across two London buildings and one location in East Anglia. Where public transport is not suitable a pool car will be provided.

Working Pattern:

42 hours a week on a 7-day shift cover.

To provide management cover for three sites on a rota for 7 days a week working 12 hour day shifts from 0630 to 1830.

The shift pattern is 7 working shifts with 7 non-working shifts rotated around a 2 week period.

2 days ON, 2 days OFF, 3 days ON, 2 days OFF, 2 days ON and 3 days OFF is the standard pattern. Weekend work is required.

Holiday entitlement: 25 days at 7.2 hours (180 hrs in total)


Delivering building services (hard and soft FM) through contractors including:

  • Maintenance and operation of the building and of the building management system.
  • Managing the FM contractor using the computer aided facilities management (CAFM) system, management information, service level agreements and reports.
  • Monitoring stock levels to ensure critical spares are always available.
  • Monitoring and recording utility usage. Inputting into department sustainability objectives and targets.

Providing technical input into minor works and projects where required including:

  • Attending minor works and project meetings.
  • Undertaking familiarisation with and witness testing of new services, systems and equipment.

Ensuring all work on our sites is carried out safely by making sure that:

  • Permits to work are issued where required.
  • Method statements and risk assessments are produced prior to work being undertaken.
  • Ensuring FM services are delivered to a high standard taking account of cost, quality, customer service and available resources.
  • Managing stakeholder expectations particularly in ensuring that the site and services are available at all times.

Assisting in ensuring physical security to the site is maintained at all times by:

  • Working closely with the Senior Security Officer on matters relating to security and staffing.
  • In conjunction with the Senior Security Officer, keeping the Head of Physical Security informed of security issues and matters of related concern.

Working closely with the Service Manager and other managers to meet departmental objectives and commitments by:

  • Keeping records and documentation up to date.
  • Issuing regular management reports.
  • Attending head office meetings.
  • Establishing and maintaining good communications and relations with stakeholders.

Who are we looking for:

The successful candidate will be a team player with good initiative, judgement and organisational skills. We are looking for someone who can communicate with credibility and build strong working relationships with others. Whether you are exploring options with colleagues to address any issues or completing logs and handovers, you’ll convey a clear message. A flexible approach and the ability to work well under pressure and prioritise is key. You’ll be keen to undertake further training and be physically fit enough to climb ladders and carry out internal inspections of plant. A medical test may be required as part of the recruitment process.


HNC Electrical/Building Services or equivalent with a minimum of 5 years’ experience or City and Guilds qualification with a minimum of 10 appropriate years’ experience (essential)

Full current driving licence (essential)


  • Shift working (essential)
  • IT skills and good working knowledge of Microsoft Office Systems including Word and Excel(essential)
  • Knowledge of CAFM systems, BMS systems, Fire Alarm Systems, security systems of electrical testing and HV systems (desirable)
  • An understanding of maintenance regimes, techniques, statutory compliance and life cycle planning (desirable)

Career Development:

We’ll give you all the support and training that you need; for example, if required, training will be provided on: HV, LV, confined space, mechanical systems, water systems, health and safety and first aid.

Eligibility Criteria:

To be eligible to apply, you must meet our residency criteria. You must be a born or naturalised British citizen and one of your parents must be a British citizen or have substantial ties to the UK.

Candidates must normally have been resident for nine out of the last ten years prior to making an application. This is particularly important if you were born outside of the UK. You will nonetheless be considered if you have, for example, served overseas with HM Forces or in some other official capacity as a representative of Her Majesty’s Government, studied abroad, or lives overseas with your parents.

Recruitment Process:

  • Firstly, you will be asked to complete our pre-screening questions to find out if you meet our initial criteria. If you do meet these criteria we will then direct, you to begin an application.

On successful completion of all recruitment stages you will enter into the vetting process, which will involve a security interview.
