Enterprise Data Architect

This is a great opportunity for an experienced Enterprise Data Architect to further their career within Direct Line Group, a leading Insurer based in Bromley.

This role sits within CTO and will be responsible for establishing, maintaining, communicating and governing a Data Architecture strategy and roadmap, ensuring it is aligned with DLG corporate strategies, business goals and agreed IT strategies and plans. The Enterprise Data Architect will be an expert in specifying solutions and building/delivering and supporting data platforms.

Key Accountabilities;

The Enterprise Data Architect is responsible for defining how DLG data and information will be stored, consumed, integrated and managed by different data entities and IT systems, as well as any applications using or processing that data in some way. Responsible for:

  • Work closely with the Chief Data Officer (CDO) and other key stakeholders within the business and CIO function to create the DLG Data and Master Data Management (MDM) Strategies, Roadmap and Strategy Execution Plan (SEP), and the modelling and maintenance of the data strategy and roadmap in the selected EA tool and Enterprise Continuum
  • Work with stakeholders to understand the business case for change and success factors
  • Work closely with the CDO and other key stakeholders to create, publish and maintain the requisite data architecture guidance and measures, such as standards / modelling standards; policies; principles; guidance notes.
  • Work closely with the Head of Quality Management and the rest of the EA and CTO team to govern and assure the Enterprise Data Architecture and all solutions that contribute to / deliver this architecture.
  • Work closely with all of the business and key stakeholders to solicit and capture their concerns and view requirements for the DLG Data Architecture, and to guide, advise and support the rationalisation and simplification of data sources and repositories, reducing TCO.
  • Define, create and maintain the associated EA models and artefacts within the selected EA tool and Enterprise Continuum and the requisite data and information architecture views, such as:
    • Analyse, review and document the current architecture and data platforms
    • Alignment of current data platforms with future projects to determine the strategic direction of the infrastructure
    • Ontologies; taxonomies and semantic information layers, to provide a standard common business vocabulary
    • As-is; target; transitional; reference logical data and information models
    • An end-to-end vision and model for how data does and will flow through DLG and enterprise systems)
    • Capability models to support an information-centric view
    • Develop data models for database structures where necessary
    • Capture, model and describe data requirements, data definitions, business rules, data quality requirements, data security requirements;
    • Develop and maintain canonical message models;
    • Define source-to-target mappings for data migrations
  • Provide technical oversight to application architecture and solution development teams in creating business driven solutions adhering to the enterprise architecture and data governance standards
  • Regularly (quarterly) publish a Point of View (PoV) article on the adoption of new technologies; paradigms, standards (related to Enterprise Data and Information architecture); new opportunities for data acquisition and data quality management that will lead to a step improvement in how data is managed, consumed, manipulated, maintained and monetised within DLG. Follow through on approved PoV articles with suggested projects and solutions to instantiate suggested improvements, with a business case to justify associated instantiation expenditure.
  • Build and maintain an inventory of data needed to implement the Enterprise Architecture and a corporate repository of all data architecture artefacts and procedures
  • Build, maintain, and govern the Enterprise Data Portfolio and the lifecycle management of data, liaising closely with the Enterprise Archive initiative and system to ensure appropriate and efficient management of live system data without compromising holistic data integrity
  • Implement measures to ensure data accuracy and quality and secured RBAC-based accessibility within the selected EA tool and Enterprise Continuum
  • Prepare and deliver formal presentations to the relevant stakeholders
  • Engage with risk management function to raise, log, track and resolve any data architectural issues / risks that could have implications against the data and applicable security models
  • Provide guidance for the implementation of data-centric services and solutions
  • Engage and working with suppliers and partners in order to define the best possible solution and the most appropriate deployment of their technology and products to align with the DLG strategies.
  • Identify and exploit the re-use of any components, patterns or techniques and documenting & abstracting these for re-use by delivery projects, ensuring that projects do not duplicate functionality or diverge from each other and business and IT strategies.
  • Ensure that operational and supportability guidelines are factored into the construction of any solution – this will include liaison with the relevant live service and service management teams to ensure that they understand the implications of the data design.
  • Work with the Data Scientists and Analytical teams; establish a roadmap for MI & BI tools as well as drive the requirements for a Cloud-based data analytics environment.
  • Work with IT architects and development leads on planning, prioritising and executing implementation plan within deadlines.
  • Work with the Information Security teams to establish Data security standards and policies
  • Define, deliver and supporting Master Data Management and data cleansing solutions
  • Internally consult on the most appropriate use of data warehousing and/or data marts
  • Ensure utilisation of common architectural platforms e.g. Teradata, Oracle etc.
  • Provide quality assurance and drive data propagation and persistence in a complex, heterogeneous multi-platform environment.
  • Align ETL and ELT processes for data ingestion with the strategic direction of the data and application platforms

Skills and Experience;

  • Extensive experience in developing Enterprise Architecture for data and information domains
  • Excellent data modelling skills
  • Excellent time and task prioritisation and management skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with good senior-level stakeholder management soft skills and competencies;
  • Advanced level knowledge and understanding of application design, systems engineering and integration, in particular in the areas related to the generation, consumption and manipulation of data;
  • Experience with the use of the leading EA tools and data modelling technologies such as Metis; Sparx EA and Erwin
  • Has experience in data architecture, including conceptual and logical data modelling (ideally in Erwin), possibly with wider data management experience (including business intelligence, data analysis, data migration, data quality, data governance)
  • Shows a systematic, disciplined and analytical approach to analysing complex information and towards problem solving, paying close attention to detail
  • Is familiar with the agile software engineering life cycle for development and the concepts and practices required to implement effective information systems in large, global organisations
  • Is knowledgeable and experienced in supporting / working with the DevSecOps paradigm
  • Broad knowledge of enterprise information systems including structured and unstructured data management systems
  • Experience in creating enterprise scale information strategies in support of large scale transformation initiatives
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to build senior level relationships
  • Experience with RDBMS and NoSQL databases
  • MDM strategy architecture and delivery experience
  • Experienced and knowledgeable in emerging tools like columnar and NoSQL databases, predictive analytics, data visualisation, and unstructured data.
  • Technologically and politically neutral, articulate, persuasive, and a good salesperson, and enthusiastic
