Enterprise Infastructure Architect

This is a great opportunity for an experienced Enterprise Infrastructure Architect to further their career within Direct Line Group, a leading Insurer based in Bromley.

This role sits within CTO and will be responsible for establishing, maintaining, communicating and governing a Cloud Architecture and roadmap, ensuring it is aligned with DLG corporate strategies, business goals and agreed IT strategies and plans.

The Enterprise Infrastructure Architect is responsible for the definition, creation, maintenance, governance, and communication of the infrastructure strategy, roadmaps, architectures and patterns for DLG, covering the entire enterprise infrastructure domain (comprising cloud, servers; virtualisation; storage; network; operating systems; patching; infrastructure integration; monitoring and alerting; batch and job scheduling; and so on)

Key Accountabilities;

  • Work closely with the Head of EA and Chief Architect and other key stakeholders within the business and CIO function to create the DLG Infrastructure strategies, roadmaps and Strategy Execution Plans (SEPs), and the modelling and maintenance of these artefacts (and all other infrastructure-related artefacts) within the selected EA tool and Enterprise Continuum
  • Work closely with the Head of EA, Chief Architect and other key stakeholders to create, publish and maintain the requisite infrastructure architecture guidance and measures, such as standards / modelling standards; policies; principles; guidance notes; and so on.
  • Responsible for maintaining the long term Cloud Infrastructure Architecture, Enterprise Service Bus and Enterprise Integration Platform Architecture blueprints and designs.
  • Responsible for ensuring and governing security by design is embedded in all Architectural blueprints
  • Provide governance through the design authority on project implementation of designs
  • Provide advice, guidance and domain expertise in order to:
    • Assess the cost, risk and technical impact of change and support the development of an architecture investment strategy.
    • Provide advice and guidance to foster strategic business unit alignment and ensure adoption and compliance to standards, re-use and best practice across the organisation.
    • Monitor and report progress against the roadmap and target architectures. Provide quality assurance, advice and guidance to ensure compliance.
    • Provide support for project prioritisation and the development of solution architectures.
  • Assess the impact of a solution change on the current and future enterprise architecture and the overall fit of the solution recommendation. Identify and resolve architecture issues and risks.
  • Work closely with the Head of Quality Management and the rest of the EA and CTO team to govern and assure the Enterprise Infrastructure Architecture and all solutions that contribute to / deliver this architecture.
  • Work closely with the business and key stakeholders to solicit and capture their concerns and view requirements for the DLG Infrastructure Architecture and to guide, advise and support the rationalisation and simplification of infrastructure systems, reducing TCO
  • Provide technical oversight to application architecture and solution development teams in creating business driven solutions adhering to the enterprise architecture and governance standards
  • Regularly (quarterly) publish a Point of View (PoV) article on the adoption of new infrastructure / cloud-related technologies; paradigms, standards; and so on that will lead to a step improvement in how infrastructure / cloud technologies are trialled; adopted; lifecycle and roadmap maintained; and so on within DLG. Follow through on approved PoV articles with suggested projects and solutions to instantiate suggested improvements, with a business case to justify associated instantiation expenditure.
  • Build and maintain an inventory of infrastructure assets needed to implement the Enterprise Architecture and a corporate repository of all infrastructure architecture artefacts and procedures
  • Build, maintain, and govern the Enterprise Infrastructure Portfolio and the lifecycle management of infrastructure within the DLG estate (all environments)
  • Implement measures to ensure the accuracy, quality and secured RBAC-based accessibility to the infrastructure artefacts within the selected EA tool and Enterprise Continuum
  • The Enterprise Infrastructure Architect will also play the role of Modeller when required, and as such, will:
    • Create and maintain the as-is; target; transitional; reference infrastructure architecture models
    • Capture, model and describe new infrastructure requirements (functional and non-functional), infrastructure security requirements; and so on
    • Create and maintain contextual, conceptual, logical and physical infrastructure architecture models;
    • And so on…
  • Work with the risk management function to raise, log, track and resolve any infrastructure architectural issues / risks that could have implications against the infrastructure and applicable security models
  • Engage and work with suppliers and partners in order to define the best possible solution and the most appropriate deployment of their technology and products to align with the DLG strategies.
  • Identify and exploit the re-use of any components, patterns or techniques and documenting & abstracting these for re-use by delivery projects, ensuring that projects do not duplicate functionality or diverge from each other and business and IT strategies
  • Ensure that operational and supportability guidelines are factored into the construction of any solution – this will include liaison with the relevant live service and service management teams to ensure that they understand the implications of the data design.
  • Prepare and deliver formal presentations to the relevant stakeholders;

Skills and Experience;

  • Extensive experience in developing Enterprise Architecture for the infrastructure domain
  • Strong experienced in Microsoft technologies; virtualisation technologies; storage systems; networking technologies; Open Source platforms and operating systems; cloud computing technologies (including AWS; Azure; Google; VMware vCloud; and so on); and so on.
  • Excellent time and task prioritisation and management skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with good senior-level stakeholder management soft skills and competencies;
  • Experience with the use of the leading EA tools and modelling technologies such as Metis; Sparx EA; and so on
  • Is familiar with the agile software engineering life cycle for development and the concepts and practices required to implement effective information systems in large, global organisations
  • Is knowledgeable and experienced in supporting / working with the DevSecOps paradigm
  • Technologically and politically neutral, articulate, persuasive, and a good salesperson, and enthusiastic
