Health and Safety Manager

We are currently looking for a Health and Safety Manager to join our Civil Engineering team at Skanska to provide high quality support to senior management within the business through; identifying and reporting on areas of operational excellence to drive continuous improvement, assisting with work winning activities for awards bids/tenders and providing high quality advice, guidance and coaching to project teams.

The position plays the key role in establishing and maintaining the highest Health and Safety standards for the Operating Unit and assist in the development of an Injury-Free Environment. The role will eventually culminate in deployment to a project-based role and normally involve the managing of one or more direct reporting staff.

  • Advise, guide and coach all personnel with the implementation of the business Health & Safety Management System (HSMS)
  • Ensuring compliance with and reporting on performance of the business HSMS and statutory provisions
  • Assist Project/Alliance teams with the production, review and implementation of the CPP/PEP and other plans
  • Liaison with trade contractors, designers, suppliers, client, enforcement agencies and other relevant parties
  • Communicate effectively (Accurate, Relevant and Timely) with their line manager, particularly with the escalation of accidents and incidents within both business and Project/Alliance
  • Ensuring that accidents and incidents are investigated and the findings communicated in accordance with the Business Unit timescales
  • Co-ordinate and conduct audits in accordance with business expectations, for the projects under their area of responsibility and others as directed
    Auditing of trade contractors, designers, suppliers and coordinating with other functions
  • Manage the competence of employees and ensure the H&S competence matrix/database is maintained
  • Coordinate and supervise the activities of Health & Safety Advisers including their development
  • Ensure that all monthly reports are completed, including the maintenance of accurate statistical records for the business or, projects under their area of responsibility
  • Measure H&S performance by collating and reporting performance data, including trend analysis
  • Ensure that H&S strategy/improvement plans are set and monitored for the business/project/Alliance
  • Support the business to win work. Ensuring the effective completion of Pre-Qualification Questionnaires (PQQ), bid/tenders and awards submissions
    Collate practical examples of best practice, case studies or innovations from different sources for communication around the business
    Contribute to the development of an Injury-Free Environment across Skanska
  • Deploy resources under their area of responsibility to ensure the effective management of H&S
  • Support as required the Sector H&S Manager(s) and Operations Director(s)
  • Other duties as directed by the Senior H&S Manager
We’re looking for:
  • Previous experience in relevant field of Construction Health & Safety
  • NEBOSH General Certificate or above
  • Working towards chartered membership of IOSH – CMIOSH
  • NEBOSH diploma (desirable)
  • NEBOSH National Certificate in the Management of Health and Well-being at Work (desirable)
  • MSc / PGD in Occupational Health & Safety Management or equivalent (desirable)
  • NVQ level 4 or above in Occupational Health & Safety (desirable)

Central teams are based at our head office in Hertfordshire with some regional business partners based across the UK.
