Motor Reserving Manager

Come and join our Corporate Actuarial function here at Direct Line Group. We are a team of actuaries with deep expertise across a number of business-critical areas.

A key responsibility within Corporate Actuarial is to carry out assessments of our technical provisions. We focus not only on a best estimate, but also on advising ExCo, the Board and Audit Committee on the uncertainties around that estimate – uncertainty which could come equally from the natural volatility of large claims or from a change in legislation.

We are looking for an individual with extensive reserving experience who is technically strong and has past experience within Motor Reserving.

You will be working with the largest reserves across the company, leading as a subject matter technical expert to deliver the day-to-day reserving, forecasting, monitoring and associated business decision-making activities for Motor.

What being the Motor Reserving Manager involves

  • Lead, plan, manage and deliver reserving, forecasting and monitoring data to produce insightful analysis in an independent, timely and accurate manner. Carry out review of results, produce reports and deliver presentations to a high standard for final sign-off by the Actuarial Director/Group Reserving Actuary.
  • Build, develop and assess models for reserving or other applications, using appropriate techniques to ensure that data is accurate and model processes are effective, efficient, high quality, well documented and verifiable. Lead review and consideration of the outcome of the collective analysis and its strategic implications; take ownership of continual improvement of reserving models and data processes to enable tasks to be completed in a more efficient and accurate manner.
  • Support and manage large/complex projects with potentially changing requirements & outcomes, redirecting resource within the team as appropriate ensure all competing priorities & deadlines are met.
  • Adopt effective performance management strategies to support the development of the team analysts; review work, considering the outcome of the specific task and the method used to execute it; provide feedback and create opportunities for learning in day-to-day activities; delegate work to analysts to develop their skills and experience.
  • Communicate effectively within the team and to external stakeholders to ensure thorough and accurate understanding of issues and collective buy-in to agreed solutions. Build strong stakeholder relationships and become well networked throughout the organisation.
  • Ensure that own professional and industry knowledge is up to date at all times. Actively share knowledge and experience to drive and advise on best practice within the team and across the business at all times. Facilitate the professional and commercial development of team members.
  • Reinforce the culture and core values of Direct Line Group through appropriate behaviours and actions, being a role model for more junior members of the team.
  • Be aware of and direct the team in complying on an ongoing basis with the requirements of relevant professional/legal/regulatory/risk management frameworks, e.g. Technical Actuarial Standards, Solvency II, IFRS 17 & UK GAAP requirements. Identify, own and manage the risks involved in running our business appropriate to this role, in line with the company risk framework.

Skills we are looking for

  • Qualified Actuary with deep knowledge of Motor Reserving
  • General Insurance background
  • Excellent analytical, problem solving & data manipulation skills
  • Strong communication and ability to build relationships up to a senior level
  • Experience in collaborating with multiple stakeholders to deliver a technical project
  • Ability to coach and manage junior team members
  • Advanced knowledge of Excel and ResQ (preferred)
