  • Under reported stories- our growing team of journalists covers the stories other media don’t cover with an emphasis on humanitarian relief, women’s rights, trafficking and slavery, the human impact of climate change and property rights.
  • Trust Conference- an influential international conference to take action by putting the rule of law behind women’s rights and help fight trafficking and slavery. Every year Trust Conference forges new strategic commitments to help women to know and defend their rights.
  • Trust Law is the world’s leading service providing free legal assistance to NGOs and social enterprise. The network boasts nearly 3,000 members, including some 2,500 NGOs and social enterprises, over 500 law firms and corporate legal teams, and more than 100,000  lawyers.
  • Media Development- for the past 30 years we have been training journalists and media professional, improving the standards of journalism around the world.

The Position:
We are seeking a talented, high-energy senior sub-editor with excellent writing skills and news judgment to help ensure the file produced by our global team of nearly 45 journalists and more than 150 freelancers is of the highest standard. You will be UK-based and work with the Thomson Reuters Foundation’s award-winning global news team to produce unique stories that have impact and bring under-reported human rights issues to light. You will play a major role in ensuring all stories are fair, accurate and impartial with compelling headlines, leads and golden quotes and help commission and manage freelance copy.

You will work with a team of journalists and freelancers around the world to uncover stories of real lives impacted by climate change, human trafficking, a lack of property rights, and discrimination against women and other vulnerable communities. You will help to shape these stories and come up with ideas for exclusive stories. You will also help promote our stories and the work of the Thomson Reuters Foundation to an international audience. You will help mentor up-and-coming journalists from around the world. You will help to devise and compile new ways of multi-media storytelling.

  • Sub-edit a global file involving up to 45 journalists covering humanitarian issues, women’s rights, climate change, trafficking and property rights
  • Taking a lead role in a team of sub-editors
  • Initiate and oversee unique storytelling on a range of issues of interest to the Foundation using various multimedia tools
  • Initiate stories that highlight new angles on under-reported stories
  • Help promote the Thomson Reuters Foundation at conference and other public events
  • Step in to help with other Foundation publications
  • Other duties as assigned

Essential Skills/Experience:

  • Extensive experience, including a proven track record of working on exclusive stories and running virtual teams
  • Proven mentoring experience across a range of cultures

Desirable Skills/Experience:

  • Management experience an advantage
  • Excellent writer, able to meet deadlines and work well under pressure
  • Highly organised, self starter and strong team player
  • Experience writing about humanitarian and climate issues an advantage
  • Experience building social media followings preferred
  • University degree
  • Legal right to work in the UK
