My name is Ben Duckworth and I’m 17 years old. I’ve been attending BUZZ youth activity group for 6 years and have been involved in lots of activities throughout the years. Through attending the buzz I have been able to do my work placement at CCIL because I know what they do and they know who I am and what I need.
I started work experience at Cheshire Centre for Independent Living, where I work on Tuesdays, in September last year. When I arrived for my first day, my boss, Melanie Hinde, presented me with a task list. The first job for me was producing a timetable booklet which informs people how to get to the office from different parts of Cheshire (e.g. Chester, Malpas, and Neston) and Birmingham, Leeds by bus or train, arriving at Sension House at 9 or 10am, and departing around 4pm.
My current task is editing an internal newsletter for the office, which is currently going down a storm with other staff and is busting with news to add to forthcoming editions. Edition 3 is the latest version to come out and has taken 2 months to create. During the creation of the newsletter, I go around the office, collecting personal or good news stories from people across the centre. The current edition will be my last newsletter that I will edit as I leave in June. I hope to come back after the summer continuing my newsletter because I really enjoy collecting stories, editing and producing the editions and receiving feed back.
Towards Christmas, I was busy producing a quiz for the buzz group’s annual Christmas quiz; which contained 30 questions plus a picture quiz, though the quiz was very hard, the feedback I received was brilliant. Since then, I’ve organized quizzes for a recent meal out and a family fun night with our charity of the year, ‘Sainsbury’s’. Again, if I stay for another year, I will produce more quizzes like this, and organize more events for the group.
Also during my 9-months here, I’ve produced a directory of scout and beaver association groups around the local area, and attended a meeting at an independent skills centre in Chester, with my boss who kindly picked me up, though if am going to the office, I’ll get the train.
I’ve really enjoyed my time here and the staff I’ve met and have had a laugh with, have been absolutely caring, thoughtful and friendly to me. Some of the staff commented that Tuesdays will never be the same without my chirpy smile and happiness I bring to the office.
