First black cabinet minister and joint first black MP
His political life began with membership in the Labour party in 1966 and he became a prominent member of the Greater London Council 1981-86, serving as chair of the Police Committee. Elected as MP for Brent South in 1987 he won the elections with an overwhelming seventy-three percent of the vote.
Paul Boateng was appointed as a cabinet minister on 29 May 2002 and he is the first Black Cabinet minister – 110 years after the first Black MP was elected. He now serves as the British High Commissioner to South Africa.
